We are looking to commission three Spoken Word Artists to perform at our Spoken Word night on Thursday 26th September 19.00-21.30.
This night will take place alongside our brand-new exhibition Stepping Out of The Box – a development of the Men’s Voices: Stepping Out of The Box exhibition that has toured The Witham, Locomotion and Killhope so far this year. Where Men’s Voices focused on the effect the traditional masculine stereotype can have on our mental health, Stepping Out of The Box seeks to empower all genders to question destructive cultural pressures such as the need to fit into masculine or feminine ‘boxes’. Our new content has been created by inviting girls and boys from Schools across South West Durham to ask questions around the social expectations of men and women, unpicking how they can hold us back in different ways and what a healthier alternative might look like.
We’re looking for Spoken Word Artists/ Poets/ Performers with an interest in gender norms and gender equality, whose work ties in with the themes of Stepping Out of The Box.
The Spoken Word night will be hosted at brand new cultural venue, The Art Bunker in Bishop Auckland and will be delivered in partnership with Daisy Arts’ youth theatre group, WASH. This is a fantastic opportunity for local teens to get a taste for a new artform, through both giving it a try themselves and getting the chance to see professional Spoken Word Artists do their thing.
This is paid work and artists can expect £200 for their performance on the night. Please send examples of your work (written, videos/sound recordings etc) and why you’d love to be involved in the project to email@example.com by midnight Friday 19th July.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch using the email above.
