Visual Arts Commission

We wish to commission a visual artist to create a response to our soundscape-in-development, #ustoo – a nod to the #metoo movement’s intention to give voice to those with hidden experiences of abuse.

The aim is to artistically represent the diversity of those affected by domestic abuse, including young, old, disabled, LGBT+, male, BME & professional. Survivor testimonies will feature in an exciting blend of digital & orchestral sound, representing the inclusion of contrasting demographics and helping to remove barriers to self / peer identification and increase the likelihood of those affected gaining support.

#ustoo will be installed in the Bowes Museum alongside their main Autumn exhibition, based around Guido Reni’s painting, ‘The Death of Lucretia,’ which foregrounds an Italian noblewoman who committed suicide after being raped. The exhibition opens on 26th October.

We are looking for a 2d response that would look good reproduced in an exhibition booklet as a visual accompaniment to extracts of the transcripts included in the soundscape. We will additionally produce a limited-edition range of prints of the artwork created as part of the commission.

We would expect the selected artist to meet the artistic team in August and attend a recording of the soundscape to support the creative process.

We are open to different styles including illustration and ask that interested applicants send examples of their work to lisa@changingrelations.co.uk

We want to know why you are interested in undertaking this brief and what ideas you have about how you might approach it. As the essence of this project is diversity, we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. We are not looking for sexually explicit or violent content and anticipate the final work being suitable for Secondary-aged pupils as well as adults.

The fee is £1250. The deadline for applications is 24th July. The successful artist would be notified the following week. The commission must be complete by September 30th. You would be credited in the booklet and on the prints and would be entitled to a percentage of print sales.

The successful artist would ideally be available to attend a soundscape rehearsal on Saturday 3rd August.
